Linking is not an ideal answer to the RT problem, though: it takes you away from the Twitterstream you are reading. This is why we originally started Maxitweet, to allow proper retweeting. Retweets can now be 100% faithful to the original.
As it turned out, the Unicode solution was so powerful that many other uses were envisioned: from poems and jokes to recipes, traffic information and business communications.

What is wrong with the 140 character limit?

Nothing, really. The limit shapes and defines Twitter. Maxitweet is there only for those occasions when 140 just won't do.
